Champion: Matt Wingerd
2nd Place: Steve Frake
3rd Place: Brian Koziel
2010 Recap:
Congratulations once again to Matt Wingerd for winning the 2010 Bocce Tournament. Matt now joins Doug Ross as the only individuals to have won the tournament at least 5 times.
Not satisfied with 4 second places in the past 6 years, Matt was determined to finally make it once again to the top of the standings. He was given slight help from his competitor Steve Frake who decided to forfeit the game at a score of 13 – 5. Steve decided that the butt-whoopin and the mosquitos were too much to overcome and gracefully accepted defeat and handed the championship over to Matt.
This was Steve’s first appearance in a championship game as he made it there by defeating veteran Brian Koziel in the semi’s by a score of 21 – 13. There was no other semi-final game as Dave Gould had to forfeit the game to Matt due to having a prior engagement to attend. This was unfortunate for Dave as he was playing some great bocce as he was able to defeat the defending champion Jeff Krotky and the 2003 champ Jim deBeers.
Other games of interest included defending champ Jeff Krotky defeating 8-time champion Doug Ross in the first round as well as Matt Wingerd defeating 3-time champ Robert Wingerd in the first round.
In the bags tournament, as if no big surprise, Mony Kim once once again victorious. He has now won the tournament six years in a row. Determined to dethrone Mony, Jeff Krotky just didnt have enough to overcome the 5-time champ. Better luck next year to all. Maybe we should have Mony throw with his off hand this year? Or maybe one had tied behind his back? Or both hands tied behind his back?
Again, the weather-gods were with us as we had a gorgeous day and special thanks to Jim deBeers, Dave Gruca, Jeff/Jessica Krotky and Doug Ross for bringing supplies/food as well as thanks to Beth/Steve Frake and Brian/Tressa Koziel for supplies and set-up.
Also, Congratulations to Tevika and Mony Kim on their recent marriage. Matt Wingerd presents a special celebratory cake to the happy couple.
